Gasstraat Oost 7 5349 AH Oss The Netherlands
When people say Circuit Zandvoort, they think of dunes, Formula 1 and, of course, the iconic Tarzanbocht. What many people do not know is that another icon towers above that famous corner: Zandvoort’s radar mast. A technical marvel that not only keeps an eye on the airspace, but also plays a leading role during races as a camera tower.
Architecture with character
The mast is built from a unique triangular steel construction of stacked octahedra. This gives it an airy, transparent appearance, while at the same time making it exceptionally strong and resistant to weather, wind and sea air. The slender silhouette fits surprisingly well into the dune landscape and has by now become just as recognisable as the circuit’s own curbstones.
More than just radar
Radar function: the installation at the top helps monitor air traffic and the surrounding area.
Camera tower during races: for television broadcasts, including the Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix, this is one of the best camera vantage points. From the tower, you get a panoramic view of the circuit, including the Tarzan corner, where overtaking often provides thrilling action.
Innovative and sustainable
The mast was largely prefabricated and assembled on site using smart bolted connections. This enabled construction to proceed quickly and efficiently, while keeping maintenance straightforward. Thanks to sustainable materials, the structure effortlessly withstands the salty maritime climate.
An icon in the dunes
Like the Tarzan Corner, the radar mast has become a familiar landmark for drivers, fans along the track and millions of viewers at home. It is an example of how engineering, functionality and aesthetics come together in a structure that is both practical and iconic.
